Materials:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Hook: Standard dry size 10 to 14\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thread: Yellow 6\/0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tail: Gray mottled Coq de Leon<\/span><\/p>\n

Wing: Medium Grey Deer Hair<\/span><\/p>\n

Dubbing: Light gray rabbit mixed with a touch of teased pink yarn<\/span><\/p>\n

Instructions:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Mash down the barb of the hook and place it in the vice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Run thread from behind the eye until you get half way along the shank.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remove the tag end of the thread and reverse the thread back towards the eye until you are half way back along the thread path.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Cut off about 1\/8<\/span>th\u00a0inch clump of the deer hair and place it in your hair stacker.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hit the stacker on the bench four or five times then remove the top of the stacker horizontally.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Gently remove the hair tips and brush out the short underfur with a comb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Measure the hair to the length of the hook shank then hold it firmly on top of the thread tie-in\u00a0point.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the most delicate stage of the pattern; I find it useful to wax the thread and also the top of the thread on the hook shaft.<\/span><\/p>\n

Make several wraps of thread whilst firmly holding the hair in position.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Increase the tension of the thread as you wrap backward.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Try to reposition the hair on top of the hook shank as you do this.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Trim the butts of the hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trim should be <\/span>in a more horizontal plane <\/span>than in my next picture, to avoid producing a hump.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Continue winding the thread towards the bend of the hook and correct the taper with extra thread wraps.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Take several barbules from a coq de <\/span>leon\u00a0feather and tie them in above the hook barb.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Cut off the ends of\u00a0waste from the tail fibers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The dubbing should be a light gray with just a hint of pink.<\/span><\/p>\n

Use your imagination to achieve this.<\/span><\/p>\n

I used some natural rabbit dubbing and mixed it thoroughly with a pinch of teased pink yarn.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Dub from the base of the tail towards the base of the hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Make a few wraps of thread in front of the hair to create a dam.<\/span><\/p>\n

This will hold the deer hair in an upright position.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Apply\u00a0more dubbing to the front of the fly so that there is a reverse taper at the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whip finish and apply a touch of\u00a0cement to the head of the fly.<\/span><\/p>\n
