JUICY\u00a0STONEFLIES (Kaufmann\u2019s Stonefly)<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am a novice at tying flies, and this is shown in my crude finishing. <\/span><\/p>\n

The inspiration for my stoneflies is from the recipe by Randall Kaufmann<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

If only mine looked half as good, I would be happy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tying stoneflies however has taught me a lot about fly tying. <\/span><\/p>\n

By adjusting dubbing colors I have amassed several dozen types.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have presented below some variations of a stonefly\u00a0in various colours, with \/ sans beadhead, and one with a double beadhead. <\/span><\/p>\n

You can also add rubber legs if that takes your fancy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 What you need:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

THREAD:<\/b> 8\/0 or 6\/0 black, brown, olive depending on the colour of the dubbing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

HOOK:<\/span><\/strong> TMC5263 or Mustad 9671 or 9672 <\/a>(Anything around 2 or\u00a03XH\u00a0and 3XL\u00a0or\u00a04XL), sizes 2-8; weighted with lead wraps. Note the golden stone fly is a size 8 to 12.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ANTENNAE:<\/strong><\/span> Black\/Brown turkey biot<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

TAIL:<\/strong><\/span> Same as antennae.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

RIB:<\/strong><\/span> Black, Brown or Green Vinyl Rib<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ABDOMEN:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Usually a black, brown, gold or olive-sculpin dubbing. I\u2019ve used\u00a0both Ice Dub UV, and\u00a0Senyo\u2019s Laser dubbing,\u00a0both by Hareline<\/a>. You can also their variants in Peacock Black,Chocolate Brown, Rust, Olive Sculpin and Gold. I\u2019ve blended various shades of brown and rust to get the colour I wanted. It\u2019s really down to your preference. The Peacock Black however is my favourite.\u00a0 Blend it so that it looks buggy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

WINGCASES:<\/strong><\/span> Three sections of turkey quill feather or thin skin (mottled turkey). Coat with Flexament<\/a> <\/span> \u2013><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

VERY IMPORTANT<\/strong>, >>>Clip to an \u2018M\u201d shape before tying. You can make the \u201cM\u201d Shape by folding in half an snipping off one of the corners before adding the head cement.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

THORAX:<\/strong><\/span> Same as abdomen<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

HEAD:<\/strong><\/span> Same as abdomen \/ Use a beadhead and colour it with a Sharpie if you like.<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Two Bead Heads on this one<\/p><\/div>\n

Add about 10-12 turns of lead wraps. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tie the head section using two goose biots. <\/span><\/p>\n

Wrap your thread to the end of the hook just before the bend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Tie a small ball of dubbing; this will\u00a0help the tail goose biots spread out in a \u201cV\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tie your vinyl rib.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tapering the\u00a0body with the dubbing is crucial. <\/span> So, start by adding small amounts of body, and then increase it as you reach the mid section. <\/span> The \u201cfattest\u201d part is around 2\/3 of the way from the back.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tie in the wing case \u2013 this is the only tricky part, but it makes all the difference in making a stunning fly. <\/span> \u00a0 You can add dubbing in between the wing cases. Add at least 2 wing cases if you can\u2019t manage 3.<\/span> \u00a0 A few half hitches, a bit of head cement and you are done.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Imitates the nymphs of the salmonfly<\/b><\/a> (Pteronarcys\u00a0californica).<\/i>\u00a0This fly must be fished on the bottom. Period. So weight\u00a0it heavily under the body, then flatten the weight with pliers. For extra weight, put on a beadhead.
